What the area is like
Agonda is a long quiet beach and a small village in South Goa, near Canacona. There is little bustle: the day is built around the sea, breakfast and a class, and the evenings quickly go still.
The area suits those who come for an unhurried practice and accept a smaller choice of cafes and classes. If you want more life and options nearby, look at neighbouring Palolem.
For a similar calm in the north people look at Mandrem & Ashwem; the liveliest option there is Arambol. The overview of the season, areas and styles is on the Yoga in Goa page.
Where classes are held
Classes in Agonda are held by the sea, in small shalas and in the yards of guest houses along the beach. Groups are usually small, and some places are open-air, so a lot depends on the weather.
Because the beach is long, the distance to a class can be noticeable. The address and map pin are in every Aura booking.
Formats and styles
Small groups, morning classes and multi-day retreats are more common here. There are drop-ins, courses and teacher training programmes too, but the choice is more modest than in larger areas and changes with the season.
Styles include Hatha, Yin, Restorative, as well as Vinyasa, Ashtanga and Kundalini. The teacher states the style and level; for a slow practice people usually look for gentle formats.
How to get there
The closer airport is Dabolim (GOI): approximately 1.5–2 hours by taxi. Mopa (GOX) in the north of Goa is approximately 3.5–4.5 hours away. This is approximate: the time depends on traffic and the season, and daylight is the easier time to travel.
Season
November to March is the high season: dry, with the most classes. April to May is hot, and practice moves to the morning and evening. June to September is the monsoon, and most shalas are closed. This is approximate: the dates change from year to year. In a small village the opening and closing of places can shift, so check the timetable. More in the season overview.
What to bring
A mat, light clothes, water, sun protection, some cash for small expenses and your documents. A small village has fewer shops, so it is better to bring the essentials in advance. The full list is in the What to bring guide, and your first class is covered in the beginner guide.
