Your first yoga class: what to know

Level, arrival time, etiquette, safety and cancelling a booking: briefly for a beginner.

Choose a level

To begin, look for classes marked “for beginners” or “basic level”, and a single class rather than a series. A calm start is often Hatha, Yin or Restorative; the comparison of all styles is on the Yoga styles page. The teacher states the level and the language of the class.

Arrive early

Come about 10 to 15 minutes before the start (a rough guide): you will find a spot, meet the teacher and say that you are new. The packing list is in the What to bring guide.

Class etiquette

  • Do not be late and put your phone on silent.
  • Check whether to take your shoes off: they are most often left at the entrance.
  • Respect your neighbours' space and the quiet at the start and end of the practice.
  • Ask the teacher your questions before or after class if you do not want to distract the group.

Safety

Move at your own pace and do not try to copy your neighbours. If you feel pain or dizziness, come out of the pose and rest. If you have injuries, are pregnant or have a particular medical condition, tell the teacher before the class and talk to a doctor. Neither this page nor a teacher in a group class makes diagnoses.

How to cancel a booking

If your plans change, cancel through your booking in the app or write to the teacher. It is better to do it in advance so that the spot can go to someone else. Cancellation rules can differ between teachers, so check the class description.

Next steps

Look at classes in Goa on the Yoga in Goa page or go back to the For students page.

Questions about your first class

Do I need to be flexible?

No, flexibility is not required. The teacher offers easier variations of the poses; say that you are new.

How long is a class?

Usually 60 to 90 minutes (a rough guide). The exact time is in the class description.

Can I eat before a class?

Many people prefer not to eat a heavy meal a couple of hours before practice. Go by how you feel and the teacher's advice.

How do I cancel a booking in Aura?

Through your booking in the app, or write to the teacher. Earlier is better; the rules can differ between teachers.

What if I have an injury?

Tell the teacher before the class and talk to a doctor. Choose calm classes and come out of a pose if it hurts.
