What hatha is
Hatha is one of the most widespread styles: the poses (asanas) are done one at a time, with attention to the breath and the position of the body, and there are pauses between poses. The word “hatha” is often used broadly, so the programme depends a lot on the teacher.
How a class goes
A rough guide for 60 to 90 minutes; the teacher states the exact structure.
- 5 to 10 minutes: settling in, breath, light movement.
- 30 to 50 minutes: basic standing, seated and lying poses, with explanations and pauses.
- 5 to 15 minutes: stretching and a calm finish.
- 5 to 10 minutes: final rest lying down.
Who it suits and who should be careful
It suits beginners, those returning to practice and anyone who wants to understand the basics. Be more careful if you have injuries, are pregnant or have a particular medical condition: tell the teacher before the class and talk to a doctor. Never push into pain.
What a beginner can expect
Explanations and easier variations of the poses, and the option to use props (blocks, a strap). You do not need to be flexible: it comes with practice. Arrive early and tell the teacher you are new. More in the guides Your first class and What to bring.
How to choose a teacher
- In the profile, check the level the class is for and the language it is held in.
- Write to the teacher before booking if you have injuries or questions.
- To begin, pick a single class and see whether the teacher's manner suits you.
