What kundalini yoga is
Kundalini is a style built on repeating exercises (kriyas), breath and sound: a class may include chanting mantras and meditation. The content and intensity of a class depend a lot on the teacher, so read the description and the profile.
How a class goes
A rough guide for 60 to 90 minutes; the teacher states the exact structure.
- 5 to 10 minutes: settling in, a quiet start, sometimes chanting.
- 20 to 40 minutes: exercises with repetitions, breath and movement; the teacher sets the pace.
- 10 to 20 minutes: rest lying down and meditation.
- A few minutes: a calm closing.
Who it suits and who should be careful
It suits those who are interested in breath, sound and repeating exercises, and those who are ready to follow the teacher's instructions. Be more careful if you have injuries, are pregnant or have a particular medical condition: tell the teacher before the class and talk to a doctor. Fast breathing or repetitions can feel unusual; with heart, blood-pressure or breathing conditions, talk to a doctor before the class. Go at your own pace and stop if you feel worse.
What a beginner can expect
The teacher explains and shows the exercises; you do not have to repeat everything exactly. You can skip the chanting or an exercise that does not suit you. You do not need to be flexible. Arrive early and tell the teacher you are new. More in the guides Your first class and What to bring.
How to choose a teacher
- In the description, check what the class includes (chanting, meditation) and the language it is held in.
- Write to the teacher before booking if you have questions about the breathing exercises or how you feel.
- To begin, pick a single class: teachers' manners in this style differ noticeably.

Questions about kundalini yoga
Is kundalini suitable for a beginner?
Yes, if the teacher explains the exercises. Classes differ a lot, so read the description and look for a note for beginners.
Do I have to chant in the class?
It depends on the teacher. If it does not suit you, you can listen in silence; if unsure, ask in advance.
How long is a kundalini class?
Usually 60 to 90 minutes. The exact time is in the class description.
What should I wear to kundalini?
Loose, comfortable clothes. You can ask the teacher whether a mat or a blanket is needed.
How is kundalini different from hatha?
In hatha the poses are in the centre; in kundalini it is repeating exercises, breath and sound. More on the Hatha page.
