What yin yoga is
Yin is a slow style: the poses, mostly seated or lying, are done with modest effort and held for a long time, sometimes several minutes. There are pauses between poses. It is a calm, low-intensity practice, although the sensations in the body can be noticeable.
How a class goes
A rough guide for 60 to 90 minutes; the teacher states the exact structure.
- 5 to 10 minutes: settling in, breath, a quiet start.
- 30 to 50 minutes: a small number of poses, each held for a long time; the teacher reminds you how to come out of a pose.
- 5 to 10 minutes: gentle movement between poses and a move toward the finish.
- 5 to 10 minutes: final rest lying down.
Who it suits and who should be careful
It suits those who want a soft, unhurried practice, for example in the evening or after a hot day, and beginners who need a slow pace. Be more careful if you have injuries, are pregnant or have a particular medical condition: tell the teacher before the class and talk to a doctor. Holding a pose should not cause pain: if the sensation is sharp, come out of the pose.
What a beginner can expect
The pace is slow, so it is easy to follow what to do. The teacher offers props (cushions, bolsters, blankets) and easier variations. You do not need to be flexible. Arrive early and tell the teacher you are new. More in the guides Your first class and What to bring.
How to choose a teacher
- Check in the description the level the class is for and the language it is held in.
- Write to the teacher before booking if you have injuries or questions about long holds.
- To begin, pick a single evening class and see whether the teacher's manner suits you.

Questions about yin yoga
Is yin suitable for a beginner?
Yes, the pace is very slow and the poses are simple. Holding can feel unfamiliar, so read the class description and tell the teacher about your limits.
How long is a yin class?
Usually 60 to 90 minutes. The exact time is in the class description.
What should I wear to yin?
Warm, loose clothes: the body cools down when it is still. You can ask the teacher about socks or a blanket.
Is yin good for the evening?
Many people choose it in the evening as a calm end to the day. Check the class times in the timetable.
How is yin different from restorative?
In yin the poses are held for a long time and the sensations in the body can be noticeable. In restorative the body is fully supported by props and the aim is rest. More on the Restorative page.
